Bird fever - Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

What is Bird fever ?

Bird fever is a virus that birds transmit to humans. Infected parrots, parakeets, turkeys, chickens, ducks, peasants and pigeons are the principal transports. The virus attacks the respiratory tract once it is inhaled into the body. Fever, sore throat, headache, loss of appetite and profuse sweating are the first symptoms that occur within ten days of infection.

Causes of Bird fever

  • Parrots
  • Macaws
  • Cockatiels
  • Parakeets
  • Turkeys
  • Pigeons

Symptoms of Bird fever

Common symptoms of Bird fever :

  • Fever
  • Difficulty in breath
  • Severe headaches
  • Bleeding gums
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Bleeding nose
  • Low white blood cell counts

Other symptoms of Bird fever :

  • Runny nose
  • lethargy
  • Bone aches
  • Sore throat
  • dizziness
  • Conjunctivitis
  • vomiting
  • Rashes
  • Stomach ache

Treatment of Bird fever

  • An antibiotic is very effective to reduce the infection. In some cases, medicines such as Tetracyclines are used to treat the disease.
  • Surgical removal of cavities in the lung from Valley Fever is sometimes necessary. Surgical drainage of Valley Fever abscesses in bones or joints is also commonly performed.
