What is Colic?

Colic is commonly found in infants less than 3 months old. Babies, who have this disease cries frequently without any reason. It is usually appears within the first few weeks of life and disappears suddenly before the age of four months old. Parents can worry about the disease of child. They can become discouraged, depressed and frustrated.

Sometimes, babies may experience discomfort for intestinal gas. Some babies are not tolerant of foods in the mother's diets. Some babies cry due to hunger. Sometimes, frustration, excitement or fear can lead to colic. Almost babies may cry more and more, in case of people around them are anxious, worried and depressed. About 20% of babies affected from colic. It can be developed about six weeks of age and gone at the age of twelve weeks old.

Signs and Symptoms of colic include :

  1. Predictable crying episodes - A baby who has colic often cries about the same time every day, usually in the late afternoon or evening. Colic episodes may last anywhere from a few minutes to three hours or more on any given day. The crying usually begins suddenly and for no clear reason. Your baby may have a bowel movement or pass gas near the end of the colic episode.
  2. Intense or inconsolable crying - Colic crying is intense. Your baby's face will likely be flushed, and he or she will be extremely difficult - if not impossible - to comfort.
  3. Posture changes - Curled up legs, clenched fists and tensed abdominal muscles are common during colic episodes.

Treatment of Colic

Patients may eliminate the possible triggers such as foods, medicine and feeding for the colic.

Medicine : specific medicines are also lead to crying.

Formula : Switching formulas is very necessary for some babies, but it is not effective for almost babies.

Foods : People should avoid chocolate and caffeine. Avoid nuts and diary products, because they are also caused allergic reactions in children. Babies must avoid foods.
