What is Anorexia Nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa is a eating disorder. More importantly, it is also a psychological disorder. Anorexia is a condition that goes beyond out-of-control dieting. A person with anorexia initially begins dieting to lose weight. Over time, the weight loss becomes a sign of mastery and control. The drive to become thinner is actually secondary to concerns about control and/or fears relating to one's body. The individual continues the endless cycle of restrictive eating often to a point close to starvation in order to feel a sense of control over the body. This cycle becomes an obsession, and is similar to any type of drug or substance addiction.

Causes of Anorexia Nervosa

Girls and young womens with anorexia usually stop having menstrual periods. People with anorexia have dry skin and thinning hair on the head The exact cause of anorexia nervosa is not known, but social attitudes towards body appearance and family factors are believed to play a role in its development. Severe anorexia is a serious health problem. There is no only one cause of anorexia. Anger, stress and anxiety also causes of anorexia. The other causes are below:

  • Culture
  • Change in lifestyles and stressful events
  • Personal feelings
  • Biology.
  • History of family.

Signs and Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa

  • Patients look like a thinner
  • Have a bowel movement and diet pills
  • Excessive exercise
  • Avoid foods and counts calories
  • Wear heavy clothes to hide their diseases.
  • Always conversion on the food and weight
  • Depressed or moody

Diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa

The diagnosis of anorexia nervosa that are characteristic:

    1. The refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height. Body weight less than 85% of the expected weight is considered minimal.
    2. An intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though the person is underweight.
    3. Self-perception that is grossly distorted and weight loss that is not acknowledged.
    4. In women who have already begun their menstrual cycle , at least three consecutive periods are missed ( amenorrhea ), or menstrual periods occur only after a hormone is administered.

Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa

Treatment of Anorexia nervosa's patients must want to change lifestyles, eating disorders will be suggested by doctor and must have family and friends to help them. Counseling is also necessary after every six months or a year for patients. Medicines with counseling are also recommended by health care providers. Patients experience secure, safe and comfortable with their health problems by taking love from family members and friends. Individual counseling may helpful to treat anorexia.

When you have anorexia, it can be difficult to take care of yourself properly. Follow these steps:

  • Talk to your doctor about appropriate vitamin and mineral supplements. If you're not eating well, chances are your body isn't getting all of the nutrients it needs.
  • Stick to your treatment. Don't skip therapy sessions and try not to stray from meal plans, even if they make you uncomfortable.
  • Don't isolate yourself from caring family members and friends who want to see you get healthy. Understand that they have your best interests at heart.
  • Resist urges to weigh yourself or check yourself in the mirror frequently. These may do nothing but fuel your drive to maintain unhealthy habits.
