What is Chronic fatigue syndrome?

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disease that causes you to become so fatigued (tired) you can't perform normal daily tasks. This is called chronic fatigue. The main symptom of CFS is chronic fatigue that lasts more than 6 months. Physical or mental activity often make the symptoms worse, and rest usually doesn't improve the symptoms.

CFS is complicated and difficult to diagnose. Some people have a hard time accepting CFS as a disease. It's important to remember that your fatigue is real and that you can work with your doctor to improve your symptoms.

Causes of Chronic fatigue syndrome

These and other symptoms often won't go away or keep coming back for 6 months or more.

Generally, there is no test, method or laboratory procedure to determine the chronic fatigue syndrome.

Treatment of Chronic fatigue syndrome

There's no specific treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome. In general, doctors aim to relieve symptoms by using a combination of treatments, which may include:

Changes in Lifestyle - Your doctor may encourage you to slow down and to avoid excessive physical and psychological stress. This may save your energy for essential activities at home or work and help you cut back on less important activities.

Treatment of existing pain - Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) may be helpful to reduce pain and fever.

Treatment of allergy - Antihistamines such as fexofenadine (Allegra) and cetirizine (Zyrtec) and decongestants that contain pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, Dimetapp) may relieve allergy-like symptoms such as runny nose.

Treatment of low blood pressure - The drugs fludrocortisone (Florinef), atenolol (Tenormin), and midodrine (ProAmatine) may be useful for certain people with chronic fatigue syndrome.

The best ways to prevent Chronic fatigue syndrome are :

  • You avoid the signs and symptoms of this disorder.
  • Avoid smoking and caffeine.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Reduce the stress level.
  • Start exercise such as swimming, walking and water aerobics.
  • Maintain your diet chat. Take fresh fruits and vegetables your diet.
