Mittelschmerz

Mittelschmerz Information

Mittelschmerz Information

Mittelschmerz is a German word that means middle pain. Mittelschmerz occurs during ovulation-the midpoint between menstrual periods, about 2 weeks before a period may begin. The discomfort can appear on either side of the lower abdomen depending on which ovary is producing the ovum (egg). Pain can be on one side of the abdomen one month and switch to the opposite side during the following cycle. About 20% of women experience this type of midcycle pain.

Mittelschmerz Causes

An egg develops in the ovary, it is surrounded by follicular fluid. During ovulation, the egg and the fluid, as well as some blood, are released from the ovary. While the exact cause of mittelschmerz is unknown, it is believed that the fluid or blood might irritate the lining of the abdominal cavity, causing pain. The pain goes away once the body absorbs the fluid or blood.

Mittelschmerz Symptoms

Here is the list of some of the main symptoms of Mittelschmerz :

  • one-sided lower abdominal pain.
  • Pain occurs midway between menstrual periods (during ovulation).
  • Pain can occur every month.
  • Pain lasts anywhere from a few hours to 2-3 days.
  • Usually sharp, cramping, distinctive pain
  • Severe (rare)

Mittelschmerz Treatment

The treatment of Mittelschmerz is :

  • Rest untill you feel better.
  • Drink between 10-12 glasses of water every day.
  • Take your temperature every 4 hours.
  • Do not take any laxatives or pain killers unless ordered by your doctor.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Use a Heating Pad. Heat helps to soothe cramps. Get an electric heating pad and keep it on your abdomen for 15 minutes or so.
  • Take a Warm Bath - Fill your tub up with warm water and just relax. The heat of the water will help to relieve any pain.

Mittelschmerz Prevention Tips

Preventing ovulation, which can be done with birth control pills, is the only way to effectively prevent mittelschmerz.
