Sarcoidosis - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

What is Sarcoidosis ?

Sarcoidosis is a disease that may affect any organ or system in the body. People with sarcoidosis have inflammation (swelling) in certain parts of the body. They may have no symptoms at all or they may have serious problems with many different parts of the body. The cause of this inflammation is unknown.

Sarcoidosis is most common in adults between 20 and 40 years of age. It's more common in women than in men. In the United States, it occurs more often in blacks than in whites. Sarcoidosis is not contagious. This means you can't catch sarcoidosis from another person who has the disease.

Causes of Sarcoidosis

The cause of sarcoidosis is unknown. but the following factors may play a role:

  • Viral/bacterial infection
  • hypersensitivity response (possibly from T.cell imbalance) to such agents as atypical mycobacteria, fungi, and pine pollen
  • genetic predisposition (suggested by a slightly higher incidence of sarcoidosis within the same family)
  • chemicals, such as zirconium and beryllium, that can lead to illnesses resembling sarcoidosis, suggesting an extrinsic cause for this disease.
  • A defect in body immune system
  • An unidentified toxic substance
  • An unknown environmental cause
  • An inherited or genetic factor

Symptoms of Sarcoidosis

There are many symptoms of Sarcoidosis that include:

  • A vague feeling of discomfort and fatigue.
  • Fever.
  • Weight loss.
  • Small red bumps on your face, arms or buttocks, a condition more common in blacks than in whites.
  • Red, watery eyes.
  • Arthritis in your ankles, elbows, wrists and hands, commonly associated with bumps in the skin over your shins.
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lung problems.

  • Chest X-ray.

Treatment of Sarcoidosis
